A mother of four has become the fifth person to die following the legionnaire's disease outbreak in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, three weeks after she was discharged from hospital.

June Miles, 56, had been treated at Furness general hospital for the disease, but was discharged after doctors decided she was making a recovery. Police today confirmed she had died at her home on Saturday but said it was not clear if the legionella infection was the cause of her death.

Ian Cumming, chief executive of Morecambe Bay hospitals NHS trust, said the hospital was "saddened" to hear of the death.

"Given her apparent good recovery form the disease, at this stage it cannot be confirmed that her death was definitely related to the legionnella infection. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the family and friends of this lady at this terrible time for them."

A coroner will now examine the post-mortem findings to determine whether her death was a result of legionnaire's disease.

The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 133.
