My 25-year-old daughter has recently begun teaching and has suffered one infection after another. How can she boost her immune system?
There are many remedies she could try: vitamin C maintains the immune system at peak levels (it is needed for white blood cell production). Ester-C is gentle on the stomach, and very effective. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially those from fish oils, produce a healthy immune system. Elderberry extract has been shown to inhibit a mechanism needed for viruses to replicate. Echinacea stimulates the immune system by increasing white blood cell production, while Goldenseal contains berberine, a herbal antibacterial and antiviral agent. Ginseng improves vitality, performance and resistance to stress. Zinc improves immunity, and magnesium helps you relax. Many germs are passed by contact - wash hands regularly and do not touch mouth, nose or eyes while teaching.
About a year ago, my physiotherapist diagnosed tendonitis in my right foot. I began physio with some ultrasound, which helped a little, but a year on and my foot is still swollen. Would reiki or reflexology help?
Reiki or reflexology would both stimulate healing energy and encourage blood and lymph flow to your foot. Inflammation can take a long time to cure - it is not unusual for it to take a year, depending on your age. Homeopathic ruta is effective for healing tendons and ligaments: take 12X potency twice a day for a month. MSM, a naturally occurring organic sulphur compound, is a powerful anti-inflammatory: take three 1g tablets, building up gradually to six a day until the injury has healed (MSM and ruta, both from Helios, 01892 537254).
