I have a really embarrassing problem - there's no way to put this delicately - my farts smell awful.

Flatulence occurs when gases are formed as partly digested foods ferment in the gut. High-fibre foods with resistant starches are the worst culprits. There are usually underlying digestive problems, varying from low stomach acid to food intolerance. A nutritionist would be best able to help (the British Association for Nutritional Therapy, 0870 606 1284). Chew food thoroughly and relax when eating. Eat bio yogurt regularly and eat fruit before or between meals - not at the end of the meal because this delays its digestion and encourages fermentation. Drink camomile, peppermint or fennel herb teas, or make an infusion with fresh chopped ginger. Try Obbekjaers Oil of Peppermint tablets - take two after each meal (from health food shops).

I am a 59-year-old woman who has developed a 'floater' in my left eye. I have been told by a specialist there is nothing one can do to prevent further floaters from developing or to get rid of the existing one.

Floaters are caused by accumulation of the debris in the vitreous humour - the jelly-like substance that fills the eyeball. They are seen as specks, increase with age and are more noticeable if you are shortsighted. If many appear, see your specialist but if there are one or two, they often float out of view. The herb ginkgo biloba is known to increase the circulation in the eye, reducing the occurrence of floaters. Take 40mg three times a day (but not if you are on blood-thinning medication). B complex vitamins and the antioxidant vitamins C and E are recommended for eye health.
