I am a 23-year-old male who has had severe hair folliculitis since the age of 17; this causes the root to get infected and swell with pus. My doctor has prescribed antibiotics on an ad hoc basis. Is there any natural alternative?

First, switch to a natural antibacterial shampoo such as Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Shampoo (from health food shops). Also try SOS Antiseptic Skin Rescue Spray, by Barefoot Botanicals (0870 220 2273; barefoot-botanicals.com) - keep your hair short, and use this spray in the morning and at night. Massage in silica gel daily, to provide essential elements to your scalp and dry out pus (from the Alternative Centre, 020-7381 2298; thealternativecentre.co.uk).

I am 37 and have lichen sclerosis on my penis. I was recently hospitalised because scarring had begun to affect my ability to pass urine. This condition is chronic and the medical profession has little idea of the cause. Any ideas on treatment would be gratefully received.

Although not fully understood, lichen sclerosis is thought to be related to two major causal factors: an overactive immune system or a bacterium that may cause the immune system to become active. A natural antibacterial such as Goldenseal (from Victoria Health 0800 3898 195) may be helpful in the long term. Because the foreskin hardens with this condition, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids will be good for their moisturising and detoxifying properties. Crucially, you need to consider circumcision, where usually the condition disappears. I'd also advise treatment from a homeopath or naturopath.
