A reader asks: I have just had my blood pressure measured and it is 139/75. Is this OK?
Simon says Nice (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) guidelines suggest that only people with a blood pressure of 140/90 or above should be considered for treatment so your blood pressure is fine. Simple things can be done to try to keep it that way, with the usual suspects - low-fat, high-fibre diets and exercise - at the top of the list. Try to get at least 30 minutes exercise (which need only mean a brisk walk) three times per week. Don't smoke and keep your alcohol intake down to the recommended levels of 21 units per week for men and 14 per week for women. Caffeine can also put blood pressure up so it's worth watching your coffee intake. Eat no more than six grammes of salt per day.
