There are two good reasons for heading down to the Alps in summer. The first, obviously, is the scenery and healthy mountain air; the second is the great deals available in an area where the ski season is by far the busiest period.

That means lots of spare capacity now all the snow has melted. Take The Clubhouse, which describes itself as "France's first ever Alpine boutique hotel".

The renovated art deco mansion with two bunkhouses and four swish suites is offering two-night weekend breaks from €144pp including breakfast and a three-course meal cooked by Mark Webb, formerly of Chez Bruce and La Trompette.

To burn off those calories there is hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting, canyoning and a summer luge.
