A second student at Cambridge University has caught swine flu, it was revealed today.

The Health Protection Agency confirmed a second student had tested positive for the H1N1 virus. The student is a "close contact" of the student at Gonville and Caius college who was confirmed as having the virus on Friday.

The pair are being quarantined in Cambridge and are under constant medical supervision. The agency said both students were "recovering away from other students".

Staff and students were warned to be vigilant and to contact their GP or NHS Direct if they develop flu-like symptoms. The Health Protection Agency has advised the university that the college may remain open until the end of term.

It comes after a patient suffering from swine flu died in hospital in Scotland. The 38-year-old was the first person outside the Americas to be killed by the virus. More than 1,000 people in Britain and 680 elsewhere in Europe have contracted the H1N1 virus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared swine flu a pandemic on Thursday. Anyone worried about swine flu should call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or the national swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513.
