I started early on Monday to catch up with admin. I needed to know how we were going to cope with the next six months, because there is going to be quite a big slash in NHS funding for pharmacies. I had advertised for new staff a few weeks ago, so I had to review whether those would be affordable.
We open from 8.30am to 6.30pm and Monday tends to be hectic with people who have been dealing with symptoms over the weekend, so the phone never stops ringing.
I had seen a customer on Friday whose blood pressure was quite high and asked him to come back after the weekend. I tested it again and it was still quite high so I made him an appointment with the doctor. I reviewed a few patients' medication.
I have more staff in on Wednesday, so I did some home deliveries. I don't shut the doors at 6.30pm and go home. Doctors know I will stay late, so sometimes they will call late and ask if I can get some medication to a patient at home, which I do.
On Thursday, we had a locum pharmacist in, so I had the chance to visit one of the surgeries. I try and do this once a month or so. I often advise patients about their medication. Saturday is one of our busiest days because we see all the people who can't get to us during the week, and we also get emergency prescriptions in.
One of the best things about my job is that we feel we are such a part of the community and we really get to know our customers. If I can help them in any way, I find that really satisfying.
