Tom Hanks has revealed he has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
The actor was speaking on Late Night with David Letterman, and told the chat show host: "I went to the doctor and he said, 'You know those high blood-sugar numbers you've been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you've graduated! You've got Type 2 diabetes, young man!'"
Hanks took to Twitter to confirm the news. He went on to explain his condition was "controllable" and that he had been told that if he got back to his weight in high school, he would no longer have the condition, but, Hanks joked: "I weighed 96 pounds in high school... and you know, most of that was that big white Afro that I wore back in the '70s."
Type 2 diabetes is a disorder associated with elevated glucose levels in the blood along with insulin deficiency. Along with genetic predisposition, the condition is associated with lifestyle factors such as excess body fat and lack of exercise.
