Is an electric toothbrush really worth the expense?

My dentist keeps badgering me to buy an electric toothbrush, but which should I go for? There is a bewildering range – some even costing around £220. What do I need to pay, and what features – if any – are a must? My old £2 Oral B was so much easier.
