There is so much confusing information on social media about skincare, but it’s crucial to get advice from experts. When puberty starts, hormone levels shift and the skin sometimes becomes oilier and more acne-prone. “The oil can mix with dead skin cells and bacteria which can clog pores, leading to pimples, blackheads, inflammation and acne,” says dermatologist Dr Anna Protasova at Evolution Aesthetics Clinic.

The ideal is to balance your skin’s oil production, so using a gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturiser and sunscreen of SPF30 or above is key. “Choose a cleanser that is mild and right for your skin type. Use it morning, evening and after strenuous exercise,” Protasova adds. Applying acne products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be helpful. Follow this with a light moisturiser with SPF.

Avoid strong skincare products like retinoids, high concentrations of acids and powerful anti-ageing products, Protasova says.

Brands such as Beauty Pie and Indu have ranges for teens. La Roche-Posay and Avène are also great options. You might also like Starface Pimple Patches, to help any spots heal.

Acne can be really tough, so if you’re struggling, speak to somebody you trust. And if you’re having any serious skin worries, see your doctor or a dermatologist for advice.
