· We took our seven-year-old to Hven, a Swedish island - reached by ferry from Landskrona - some years ago. The island is a plateau so flat on top with steep bits down to the various beaches and ferry terminal. There was a huge bicycle hire area, which was an entertainment in itself.
Another idea is the French island of Porquerolles, near Hyeres, rougher going over heathland paths and probably better out of peak season (we went before Easter weekend).

· I would suggest north-east Poland as an ideal area for cycling. The town of Augustow provides a good starting place. This whole region is covered with forests and lakes and has many attractions for cyclists. There are numerous forest tracks, which are safe for children, they lead to villages and lakes. There is also a cycle track along the Augustowski canal (which in due course will be listed as a Unesco world heritage site). If you get bored of cycling then you can try canoeing or horse riding. Augustow also has the advantage of only being 40kms away from Lithuania, and there are various cycle tracks in this country and the R11 goes through both areas. The Biebrza national park is only 30kms south of Augustow. solarsky.com.pl rents out bikes in Augustow and they can also provide maps and English speaking guides, but there are numerous bike hire shops in the area.

· Denmark is very flat. The highest point Himmelbjerg (Heaven mountain) is approx 300m high. There are cycle paths everywhere including national cycle routes across the whole country. Also very nice hostels known as "vandrerhjem" all over the country. Almost Everyone speaks English and cycling holidays are as Danish as beer and pastries.
