The new tourist trap is … the dentist

Driven by a shortage of dentists in their home towns, tourists are 'combining a trip to see Cumbria's wide open spaces with a chance to open wide'.

The Cumbrian tourist board must have a fairly easy time promoting the Lake District. Not short of an attraction or two, are they? With quaint teashops, ravishing mountains and beautiful villages, there's not much there that wouldn't bring coachloads of Japanese tourists clamouring for a piccy.

However, the area's latest 'highlight' with which Cumbria Tourism seeks to draw in the hordes is a world away from the traditional Beatrix Potter-Scafell Pike-country pub package - step forward Grange Dental Practice in Grange-over-Sands.

Driven by a shortage of dentists in their home towns, tourists from as far away as Wales, Cornwall and London are 'combining a trip to see Cumbria's wide open spaces with a chance to open wide', according to Chloe Booth, a partner in the private practice which has been signed up as a member business by Cumbria Tourism.

Starting in two months, the practice's website will offer weekend breaks, with discounts at local hotels. It will also provide procedures that normally require a series of visits in a single session.
