I recently had a tooth extracted due to recurring abscesses. My dentist thinks the infection has also spread to the adjacent tooth. How should I prevent further damage?

The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, so reduce your sugar intake and avoid fizzy drinks. These products also contain phosphoric acid, which erodes teeth. Zinc is a powerful immune stimulant (take 80mg a day), and garlic acts as a natural antibiotic - take two capsules three times daily. Secondly, do you have many mercury fillings? (Mercury lowers resistance to infection.) If so, consider having them changed - ring the British Society for Mercury Free Dentistry on 020-8746 1177. Goldenseal is the most powerful natural herbal antibacterial - the preparation made by Eclectic Institute is very concentrated. Take 20 drops three times a day in water, and use only for three to four weeks maximum. Gengigel Gel has been found to regenerate healthy gum tissue. To support this treatment, use Gengigel Mouthrinse twice a day. Eclectic Goldenseal, £8.95 for 30ml; Gengigel Gel, £6.49 for 20g; and Gengigel Mouthrinse, £7.99 for 150ml. I use products only sparingly to wash my face, most of the time simply swilling it with water. But I get raw red pores on my skin. Any suggestions?

Wash your face in bottled or filtered water - if your skin is sensitive, the chlorine or other chemicals used to purify tap water may be irritating it. To reduce the redness and soreness, try Bach Flower Rescue Cream, available in health food shops and chemists. If there is no improvement, contact the Alternative Centre (020-7381 2298, thealternativecentre.co.uk).
