I have endometriosis in my fallopian tubes. I'm 36 and the pain has grown dramatically in the past year to the point where for a day in each cycle I am sick, have diarrhoea and pass out at least twice with the pain. How can I reduce the effects of endometriosis or, failing that, the pain?

Endometriosis is a perplexing complaint thought to be linked to excessive amounts of oestrogen. A blend of specialised herbs, such as Vitex agnus castus, red sage, peonia and liquorice, could normalise hormone levels. Flax/linseed contains isoflavones that also help regulate oestrogen activity. The pain you experience is probably due to inflammation. Fish oil and evening primrose oil can help reduce this without the gastric side effects of painkillers. Calcium and magnesium help reduce muscle spasm. Limit caffeine (four cups of coffee or more a day can double the risk of endometriosis). Several studies show that regular exercise can also reduce symptoms. I'd suggest a full naturopathic consultation (General Council and Register of Naturopaths, 08707 456984; naturopathy.org.uk).

You recently recommended a fish oil product that was palatable to children. Is there a vegetarian alternative for my six-year-old?

The omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish oils can also be derived from flax/linseed, hemp and pumpkin oils, all of which have the same beneficial effect on young brain development. An excellent alternative is LipoCare by BioCare (mail order, 0121-433 3727), which contains a blend of cold-pressed flaxseed oil and fatty acids from marine algae. It costs £16.95 for 60 capsules (a two-month supply) from good healthfood shops .
