The new fitness craze of Nordic walking has given rise to a host of activity holidays dedicated to the sport.

A cross between high-altitude power walking and cross-country skiing, Nordic skiers stride up mountains using a side-to-side rhythm that burns 20 per cent more calories than normal walking.

The sport was developed in Finland in 1997 as a summer training method for cross-country skiers. It was introduced to the UK six months ago.

Last week, Get Set Go To Fitness (01263 740738) began Nordic walking holidays at a new holiday centre in Blakeney, north Norfolk. A three-day weekend with three hours' training is £340pp.

Earlier this summer, Inntravel (01653 617722) launched trips to Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. A week half-board, including one-and-a-half-day's guided walk, flights, rail transfer and chairlift pass costs from £778pp.

Nordic Walking Holidays (01638 742003) runs trips in France, Switzerland and Austria, all £480pp for three days, including flights.
