My body & soul

Britt Ekland, actor, 65

Are you healthy?

I am as far from a hypochondriac as you could ever be. In the past 15 years I've maybe had two colds. I listen to my body, I give it things it wants and I eliminate things it doesn't want.

Do you worry about your weight?

I've learnt what I have to do, the foods I have to avoid, and I exercise a lot, so no. I dieted all the time in the Sixties, but we had no idea what dieting meant - we thought it meant not eating anything.

What exercise do you take?

It would be easier to tell you what I don't take. I've been doing Pilates since 1974, I lift weights, I power walk every day and I run backwards. That's sometimes a little hard when you're not on your home turf, because you've got to find a place where there are no bumps in the way - or people.

How much sleep do you need?

I absolutely need eight hours plus. I'm grumpy if I have any less - I growl.

Attitude to smoking?

I started at 15, stopped when I was pregnant with Victoria at 21, started again in my mid-twenties and finally stopped at 28. I can either stuff my face with something until it comes out of my ears or I'm so disciplined I won't touch it. With smoking, I just stopped.

Have you ever taken an anti-depressant?

Yes, after my mother died. My doctor gave me a minute amount of Prozac, I took it for 10 days and I thought, 'I'll cope with this on my own,' and I did.

What about drugs?

It would be truly pathetic if, at the age of 65, I was interested in any illegal substances. I should have my head examined.

Are you happy?

Well what is happy? I'm in a lovely flat in Edinburgh, my dog is with me, I have a show that, so far, has been very successful, I have friends coming from the South of France today to see the show and take me out and wine and dine me, I have work lined up in the future - and my oldest son is getting married. So, yes, I am happy. But I can't say that, at this point in my life, being happy is of paramount importance. I don't have to be happy, I need to be satisfied - and I am.

How do you feel about cosmetic surgery?

It think it's wonderful. But there should be an age limit: it should be absolutely forbidden for anyone under 40. It's for older people - to lift the chin here and take a couple of crow's feet out there - not for young people who want to be bigger and plumper or thinner. Of course, it's fatal when actresses use Botox. I remember seeing Cold Mountain and it really looked to me like Nicole Kidman had been using it. Her face was neither sad nor glad - nor anything, she was just like a painted doll. I thought: 'Why would she do that?'
