You need essential fatty acids in your diet, so eat plenty of oily fish such as mackerel, tuna, herring, salmon, and take two tablespoons of Udo's Choice oil every day (a 2:1 blend of the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, 08450 606070). Increase your consumption of lightly cooked vegetables, eat a bitter green salad after meals, and juice organic vegetables to help detoxify your body and heal your liver. Eat wholegrain rice instead of wheat pasta, and drink nettle tea. Also try Botanical Therapeutics cream; it includes nettles, along with a blend of nourishing oils and tree extracts with antifungal, antibacterial and healing properties (0800 413596).

Have you any dietary/lifestyle hints for coping with haemorrhoids? I am a 60-year-old male, vegetarian and moderate drinker of red wine.

Ensure that you do not become constipated, as haemorrhoids are usually related to this condition; eat plenty of gentle fibre such as whole brown rice, oats and millet, along with vegetables, particularly dark green ones such as kale, which is a rich source of vitamin K (essential for blood clotting and to help give relief if bleeding). If the haemorrhoids are aggravated by drinking wine and you are prone to constipation, it might be worth trying the homeopathic remedy nux vomica; use 6C potency four times a day for up to a week.
