Switzerland

Staying at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof (+41 81 830 3030, kronenhof.com) in Pontresina, a peaceful mountain village, allows you to combine skiing and spa-ing. The hotel is six miles from St Moritz and has an indoor infinity pool, flotation pool, saunas and steam rooms. A two-day package costs £380pp, excluding flights is available 6-18 December and 9-19 January includes half board, 30% off ski passes and spa access, and 10% off treatments.

Hungary

If you can wait until spring, HF Holidays (0845 470 8558, hfholidays.co.uk) has a fabulous guided cycling holiday exploring Hungary's spas and thermal baths. The trip starts and ends in Budapest and takes in thermal sites around the country. The cycling follows quiet routes through national parks and along the shores of lakes. From £715pp for seven nights' half board, including bike hire and thermal bath entries but not flights. Next trip 19 May.

Italy

Lefay Resort & Spa (+39 0365 241800, lefayresorts.com) is set in 27 acres of woodland and olive groves overlooking Lake Garda. The spa has five types of sauna and a salt water lake. Until 6 December, there is 30% off a three-night stay (now £508pp) including consultations, treatments and massages.

Slovenia

Lasko, the "town of beer and flowers" in eastern Slovenia, is also renowned for its healing waters. The historic spa is a 15-minute walk from the town centre, set in parkland by the Savinja river. The emphasis is more on health than beauty. Thermalia (01843 864688, thermaliaspas.co.uk) has five nights for £419pp, including flights to Ljubljana with a value up to £100, and half board accommodation, but not treatments.

Croatia

The Excelsior is a luxury hotel on the edge of Dubrovnik's old town. It has been welcoming guests since 1913 – from Queen Elizabeth II to Elizabeth Taylor – and was refurbished in 2008 to include a spa and beauty centre complete with Turkish and Roman baths and a Finnish sauna. Four nights' B&B with Sanctuary Spa Holidays (0870 243 1972, sanctuaryspaholidays.co.uk) costs £749pp, including body and face treatments and a massage.
