My body & soul

Rupert Penry-Jones, Actor, 38

Are you healthy?

Not bad. Having children means I now look after myself more than I used to. I don't go out partying so much. I've always taken a lot of exercise - I get a bit depressed if I don't. In terms of food I'm a bit of a grazer. I hate feeling full, so Christmas is about the only time I really stuff myself. I've got wrist injury at the moment from a driving stunt and a knee injury from slipping over in a chase sequence in Spitalfields Market.

Ever spent a night in hospital?

When I had my wisdom teeth out at 19. It was surreal, but I quite enjoyed it. I'd sit with these old guys in the smoking room. While they puffed their cigarettes and told me how they'd lost their eye to cancer.

Do you worry about weight?

Absolutely. I did a bit of modelling before I took up acting and I was up for this big campaign, I can't remember which designer, and all these execs were looking at my portfolio. Then one said: 'We'd like to use you, but can you come back next year when you've lost this.' And he tapped the underside of his chin.

How much do you drink?

A glass of wine most evenings. I was about 13 when I first tried alcohol. I had a capful of every bottle of alcohol in my parents' drinks cabinet - whisky, Martini, Cinzano, Baileys, the lot. Then I staggered about in the field behind their house and threw up everywhere.

What about smoking?

I started when I was 13. It went hand in hand with the alcohol. One of the things that made me give up, at 30, was watching myself smoking in a scene on the telly. I realised how stupid I looked.

Are you happy?

Yes, very. I have two beautiful children, a wife who loves me very much and who I love - and my career is going well, too.

Is sex important to you?

Definitely. I've always been highly active. I remember when I was quite young I was washing up with my dad and I asked him what he looked forward to most when he'd become 18, and he said being able to drive a car. I was completely flabbergasted - driving a car over shagging a woman!

Have you had therapy?

No, but I think it would be fun to have someone you can just blurt all your crap out to and not feel it would ever come back and bite you.

How do you feel about cosmetic surgery?

As long as I don't need it, I don't believe in it.
