Ask Emma…

I have started taking the pill and am worried that it may deplete essential nutrients from my body. Are there things I should be eating/supplements I should be taking to prevent this and help with side effects?

You'll need vitamin B6, B12, folic acid, vitamin C and zinc, but in the short term, attention to diet will keep you in good health. B6 is found in bran cereals, sunflower seeds, lentils, potatoes, carrots, chicken, eggs, fish, meat, peas, spinach and walnuts. B12 is found in tofu, seafood, milk, mackerel, herring, kidney, liver, eggs and cheese. Folic acid in wholegrains, beans, brown rice, bran, brewer's yeast, meat, fish, leafy vegetables, root vegetables and milk. Vitamin C in green vegetables, berries and citrus fruits, while oysters, popcorn, sesame seeds and beef steak are excellent sources of zinc.

Is there anything I can do to prevent heat rash in a hot climate?

Stay out of the sun, wear light cotton clothing and drink lots of water. Shake 6 drops each of eucalyptus, lavender and camomile essential oils with a teaspoon of vodka and mix with litre of spring water. During the day, spray this over the areas susceptible to rash. If a rash develops, add 4 drops of lavender oil to one cup of baking soda and mix well. Add it to a tepid bath.
