Since I've been pregnant, I have had blocked sinuses. This is very uncomfortable and stops me sleeping. Might it be related to what I eat?

Nasal and sinus congestion is common in pregnancy. It is due to high levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the body, increasing the blood flow to the mucous membranes and making them swell. Allergies can also be aggravated in pregnancy - dust, pollen, smoke and the usual suspects, dairy and wheat. Begin by avoiding all dairy, and see if there is any improvement. Get calcium from green vegetables, sesame seeds, soya, dried fruit (especially figs), almonds, oily fish and possibly supplements (ask your GP). Try steam inhalations with lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint or pine before bed, or put five drops on your pillow. Fresh garlic acts as a decongestant; drinking more water will also help.

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS. Is there a natural treatment?

Irritable bowel syndrome has a variety of symptoms (constipation, diarrhoea, cramps, indigestion, bloating, nausea) and causes (food allergy, infection, toxic overload, stress), but it is possible to become symptom-free. A nutritionist can do allergy and stool testing, and advise on diet. The right mineral balance improves digestive enzyme production and helps the gut muscles work properly; essential fatty acids and L-glutamine amino acid calm inflammation; antioxidants detoxify the system. Avoid caffeine, saturated fats and alcohol. Peppermint tea will soothe the intestinal tract, while deep abdominal breathing and reflexology will address stress. Contact the British Association for Nutritional Therapy, 0870 606 1284.
