Encouraging swimming: another approach

Free swimming for the over 60s seemed like a great idea when it was announced last week. But one Labour backbencher thinks the money could be better spent.

Chris Bryant tells me he will use his Westminster Hall debate on "government support for swimming" tomorrow to make the case for using the money to improve swimming pool changing rooms.

"One of the key reasons people don't go swimming is because they don't like the changing rooms," he tells me. "Either because there is no privacy or because they are not clean.

"The danger with making swimming free is that all those who already swim will just be swimming for free. We should be encouraging those who don't currently go swimming to take it up again."

What do you think?
