Alert over clubber with HIV

Women in Leicester urged to get check-up if they had unprotected sex between 2002 and 2007

Health officials fear that a man with HIV who has been a nightclub regular in Leicester and had unsafe sex with many partners encountered at the venues over six years could have put a number of women at risk.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA), which believes the man's partners might have totalled more than 100, is concerned about his level of unprotected sex.

Yesterday women in the area were urged to get a check-up if they had had unprotected sex with any partners, between 2002 and last year, whom they met at the Burlington Club and the After Dark Club (now closed) in Leicester.

The man, who has not been named, visited the clubs weekly and frequently had sex with women he met there. Usually the sex was unprotected.

Philip Monk, a consultant for the HPA East Midlands, said: "He doesn't know [the number of women he had unprotected sex with]. There is a possibility [that number] could be more than three figures. We are concerned that there is a risk that the HIV-positive individual may have passed on the infection as a result of the sexual activity ... understandably, women who have had sexual experiences with someone they met at either of these venues are likely to be extremely concerned, but it's important that they either visit their local genitourinary medicine clinic, or a family planning clinic."

Monk added that anyone concerned could also contact NHS Direct, on 0845 603 0897, where staff have been briefed on the case.
