Firms in Japan have been encouraging employees to power nap while at work to improve performance. Some companies are allowing workers 20 minutes of shuteye at their desk or in the staff lounge; others specify a 30-minute nap can be taken any time between 1pm and 4pm.
But would you feel comfortable sleeping on the job? Maybe you don’t mind colleagues seeing you drooling, snuffling and twitching suddenly in your sleep. Would you be able to fall asleep with your head on your desk or sat upright in a chair in the communal lounge? And are workers who opt for a siesta likely to be seen as shirkers, or as so hard-working, so self-righteously exhausted, that sleeping at work is the only way for them to deal with their busy schedules?
